The SPS Blue Nile team presented the latest seasonal forecast for the June–September (JJAS) rainy season across the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) at the 73rd Pre-Climate Outlook Forum (PreCOF73). The forum took place at the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) in Nairobi from 11 to 15 May 2026. The forecasts presented by Coordinator Dr Windmanagda Sawadogo and Principal Investigator Prof Harald Kunstmann indicate a strong signal of a drier-than-normal season and a warmer-than-normal season for the GHA region. The forecasts were derived using PyCast S2S, a Python-based tool for correcting the biases in global ECMWF-SEAS5 forecasts. The findings were shared with regional forecasters as part of the collaborative process of developing a consolidated seasonal outlook for the GHA, thereby entering the GHACOF 73 process.
