BMBF engaged in five transnational projects funded under the Water JPI

The Joint Programming Initiative „Water Challenges for a Changing World“ (Water JPI) issued the 2017 Joint Call on „Water resource management in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals“. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) engages in this Initiative by co-funding five transnational projects. The projects include partners from six European countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden and Cyprus), as well as Brazil and South Africa.

The shortlisted projects cover a wide range of disciplines and – just as GRoW joint research projects – will develop approaches helping to achieve the UN SDGs over the coming years.

The funded projects involving German partners are listed below:

• URBWAT – Accessible Greywater Solutions for Urban Informal Townships in South Africa – Coordinator: Craig Sheridan (South Africa) – Partner: Germany (UFZ, Uwe Kappelmeyer), Sweden
• SMART-Control - Smart framework for real-time monitoring and control of subsurface processes in Managed Aquifer recharge applications – Coordinator: Catalin Stefan (TU Dresden, Germany) – Partner: Brazil, France, Cyprus
• MadMacs - Mass development of aquatic macrophytes – causes and consequences of macrophytes removal for ecosystem structure, function, and services – Coordinator: Susanne Schneider (Norway) – Partner: Germany (IGB, Jan Köhler), South Africa, France, Brazil
• IoT.H2O - IoT for Supervision and Control of Water Systems – Coordinator: Harald Roclawski (TU Kaiserslautern, Germany) – Partner: Belgium, France, Brazil
• IDOUM - Innovative Decentralized and low cost treatment systems for Optimal Urban wastewater Management – Coordinator: Serge Chiron (France) – Partner: Germany (Helmholtz Zentrum München, Prof. Peter Schröder), Brazil, South Africa
