From February 19 to 21, 2025, the SPS Blue Nile project team, in collaboration with the IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC), conducted a combined project and technical training workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The event welcomed 17 experts from weather services, ministries, and regional organizations across Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Kenya.
The participants engaged in a tailor-made computer training session on PyCast, our SPS Blue Nile developed Python-based tool for improved regional seasonal forecasting. PyCast enables users to derive probabilistic information on expected anomalous weather conditions up to seven months ahead. They explored the tool's functionalities and applications through practical exercises, ultimately aiming to enhance forecasting capabilities for the Blue Nile and Greater Horn of Africa region.
Feedback from participants was very positive. One participant noted, “A good and advanced tool that can be used, tailored, developed, and maintained for our purposes and areas.”
On the last day, the workshop explored effective forecast dissemination systems for Ethiopia, Sudan, and the region. Participants engaged in interactive exercises to map dissemination actors and users, forecast types, and communication channels, culminating in an action plan to improve forecasting systems and practices.
Looking ahead, the workshop marked the next step in a collaborative effort to further tailor PyCast’s application to regional needs, ensuring its continued development and integration into forecasting operations.
