KIT and ICPAC share climate forecasts for upcoming rainy season with countries in the Greater Horn of Africa

SPS Blue Nile partners, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), presented forecasts for the June-September rainy season at the climate prediction development workshop preceding this year’s Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 67).

Also known as PreCOFs, these workshops are aimed at co-developing regional and national climate forecasts to prepare for the GHACOFs – a key event for regional climate resilience and preparedness taking place before each of the three main rainy seasons in the Greater Horn of Africa region.

The GHACOFs gather climate scientists, meteorologists, and experts from various sectors to share and assess the seasonal forecast impacts and develop mitigation strategies.

Besides ICPAC colleagues participating on-site in Nairobi, nearly 40 participants joined online from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

For the SPS Blue Nile team, this event was a key milestone as it is now officially recognized within the GHACOF consortium and their shared forecasts can support decision making in the crucial final year of filling the GERD dam.
