GRoW project partners at the 19th Annual Conference of the German Council for Sustainable Development

Dr. Markus Berger, responsible for the GRoW project WELLE, gives a presentation on the topic of water footprint at the 19th annual conference of the German Council for Sustainable Development.

On 4 June 2019, the 19th Annual Conference of the German Council for Sustainable Development took place in Berlin. Under the motto "Making the future our home", the conference dealt with the progress made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN Agenda 2030. Even though initial successes have been recorded, global problems continue to grow inexorably, so that concrete measures and political will are needed to implement ambitious goals in the field of sustainability. Conference participants exchanged views on current policy trends.

The funding measure "Water as a global resource (GRoW)" makes an active contribution to achieving SDG 6 and other related goals by developing innovative approaches to global water problems.

Against this background, Dr. Markus Berger (TU Berlin), responsible for the GRoW project WELLE, gave a presentation at the conference. As an expert on the subject of water footprint, he informed that water consumption in Germany is around 120 litres per day, but if consumption-related water consumption is taken into account this could be as high as 4000 litres per day. These figures impressively show the need for action in the area of a corporate water footprint that takes indirect water uses into account along the entire production chain. In order to achieve that, the GRoW project WELLE is currently working to create water footprint calculation and evaluation tool.
